About the Opportunity

FFA now has a fantastic opportunity for a Compliance Policy Advisor to join the Fisheries Operations Division. This is a full-time role based in Honiara, in the Solomon Islands. This appointment is made on a three-year term and may be renewable at this time for up to an additional three years.

Reporting to the Director of Fisheries Operations, this position exists to further the development of strategic fisheries compliance policies of FFA Members at regional, sub-regional and national level. A particular focus of the position is providing advice to Members on compliance and MCS issues in the context of the Western and Central Pacific Fisheries Commission (WCPFC).

Some of your day-to-day responsibilities will include, but not be limited to:

  • Monitoring the implementation of the Regional Monitoring, Control and Surveillance (MCS) Strategy (RMCSS), including assisting Members in development of MCS Strategies/Plans;
  • Liaising closely with relevant FOD Managers/staff on policy input into their work areas, including close liaison with FFA Legal on the development of policies, advice to Members and delivery of relevant MCS workshops and training;
  • Advising the Secretariat and Members on emerging issues in fisheries compliance; and
  • Establishing positive working relationships through consultations and advice with fisheries Compliance contacts of member countries and within regional fisheries management organisations.

About You

To be considered for this position you will have tertiary qualifications in marine policy, marine affairs, fisheries management, natural resource management or similar, with demonstrated experience in the areas of policy development and implementation experience in the management of complex multi-disciplinary activities. 

Experience working in the Pacific region and/or within an Intergovernmental Organisation (IGO) or similar public institutions will also be an advantage.

A proven ability to communicate and collaborate with a range of multi-disciplinary and multi-cultural stakeholders will be key in this role, including the ability to ensure that the executive management and other stakeholders are aware of key compliance issues facing FFA Members and best practice responses to addressing those issues. 

Excellent written communication skills will also be a must, particularly in the delivery of quality briefs and written reports.

Please Note: Previous experience living and/or working within a remote or international location, particularly in the Pacific region, will be highly beneficial.

About the Benefits

The Pacific Islands Forum Fisheries Agency (FFA) is offering the successful candidate a competitive base salary at USD$61,012 and with allowances (COLDA, Location and Superannuation) brings the annual salary to USD$89,960 TAX-FREE for citizens of most countries!

You will also have superannuation paid at 7.5% into either a nominated fund or as an additional cash supplement. FFA reimburses all reasonable medical, dental, and optical expenses for yourself and dependents. Insurance coverage is also provided for personal accident, life, medical & repatriation.

Education for dependent children will be reimbursed at 75% of tuition fees (Conditions apply). If your dependent child is educated overseas, paid school travel may be available for you or your child to visit each other once a year. 

Accommodation assistance is also available.

Additionally, relocation expenses will be paid, with an establishment grant paid on arrival in Honiara.  Annual airfares back to your country of repatriation will be provided, and a repatriation allowance of 2 weeks’ base salary on return to home-base at the end of your contract. There is also a retention incentive of 21% of your base salary which will be paid on the completion of your three-year contract.

On top of all this, you will have access to 6 weeks of annual leave each year, giving you plenty of time to explore this stunning part of the world!
